Where Thinking Meets Doing — Designing Secondary Learning Environments for Cognitive Engagement

Course Description

This course examines how learning environments in secondary schools influence cognitive engagement, problem-solving, collaboration, and career readiness. Participants explore how classrooms, labs, workshops, maker spaces, and flexible environments can support academic rigor and hands-on learning.


Drawing on learning science and evidence-based design, the course shows how educators, architects, and planners can align instructional goals, workforce competencies, safety, and spatial design. Participants analyze real secondary scenarios and identify scalable design strategies.

  1. Explain how secondary environments shape engagement, participation, and applied learning.
  2. Identify design features that support collaboration, visible thinking, reflection, safety, and hands-on learning.
  3. Analyze how layouts, furnishings, and specialized spaces shape pedagogy, cognitive demand, and workforce skills.
