Discovery by Design – Discovery, Data & Designing for Program Needs
Course Description
This session focuses on the critical discovery phase of Esports and emerging learning environments, helping participants move beyond assumptions and into intentional, student-centered design. Through a prosocial lens, attendees learn how to uncover the unique needs of elementary, middle, and high school programs by exploring student experience, instructional goals, and community priorities.
Participants examine how the right questions can reveal differences in program purpose, space utilization, supervision, technology needs, and student engagement across grade levels. From introductory, exploratory environments in elementary schools to competitive, career-aligned programs in high schools, this session provides a framework for aligning design decisions with real user needs.
Attendees leave with a practical set of questions and strategies they can immediately apply in conversations with district leaders, ensuring every Esports environment is designed with clarity, purpose, and impact.

Learning Objectives
- Develop effective discovery questions that identify student experience, instructional goals, and operational needs that influence space design.
- Differentiate design considerations across grade levels, including supervision, accessibility, engagement, and technology requirements.
- Analyze how data, observation, and program outcomes inform design decisions related to space planning, safety, and usability.
- Evaluate how planning and discovery impact health, safety, and welfare—including visibility, circulation, accessibility, and equitable use.
