Candidate for California State Superintendent and Guided Tour of 21st-Century Learning Space to Hold Center Stage at 2018 EdShift Conference
District and school stakeholders will come together in a one-day symposium to view and discuss High-Impact (Humanized) Learning Environments.
Gainesville, FL, March 29, 2018 – The ultramodern, $160 million environs of the Wiseburn High School campus, home of Da Vinci Schools, in Los Angeles will serve as the backdrop for the 2018 EdShift Conference taking place Monday, April 9. It will also be an exemplar of the event’s focus for this year – the effects of High-Impact (Humanized) Learning Environments on K-12 education. During the one-day conference, attendees will take a guided tour of the 210,000-square-foot space and hear from instructional experts as well as guest speaker, Marshall Tuck, candidate for California state superintendent.
The EdShift symposium aims to bring together educators who want to change the conversation on education and enact positive transformations in their districts. The event is sponsored by MeTEOR Education, creator of High-Impact Learning Experiences™ through modern school environments; Balfour Beatty, a top-ranked educational facilities contractor and international infrastructure group; Paragon, a provider of eco-friendly school furniture solutions and PBK, an award-winning pioneer for architectural and engineering design solutions.
The Wiseburn High School building is an example of collaboration as well as innovation. In an unprecedented district-charter partnership, the high school project has succeeded through a creative alliance of local bond funds, a charter facilities grant match, generous corporate and foundation giving, and strong community support. The renovated building now houses three small high schools, Da Vinci Communications, Da Vinci Design and Da Vinci Science plus the administrative headquarters for both the district and charter school network. The “hyper-adaptable” main building was designed by Gensler, world-renowned architects, to resemble a creative workspace. Its 72 classrooms are outfitted with furniture that can be rearranged into numerous small-group configurations and include sinks and mobile workbenches for makerspaces. The building also has a black box theater with retractable seating and several indoor and outdoor collaborative work areas. Phase two of construction, opening later this year, will include an aquatics center, a gym and soccer field.
Tuck, other educational experts and current students at Da Vinci Schools will also take part in discussions centered around the ways in which environmental design can influence learning. Rex Miller, co-author of the book Humanizing the Education Machine: How to Create Schools That Turn Disengaged Kids Into Inspired Learners, will be the conference’s keynote speaker. Miller is the principal and thought leader for MindShift, a future-focused consultancy and organizational performance firm. California Division President Brian Cahill from Balfour Beatty and Bill Latham, CEO of MeTEOR, both also co-authors of Humanizing the Education Machine, will also speak.
“This year, we’re helping attendees understand how they can make it possible for their own communities to have well-designed, high-impact learning environments that bolster learning,” said Latham. “EdShift is the only conference where every individual with a vested interest in their district’s success – superintendents, teachers, community leaders, parents and students – can come together with leading educational experts to design a vision and plan the best ways to take action. It’s different from the lecture format of most conferences, and we keep holding this event because it foments real change.”
